Biology Research Opportunity and Orientation for Transfer Students

The Biology Research Opportunity and Orientation for Transfer Students (ROOTS) Program promotes transfer student success by helping students build laboratory skills in a supportive setting while meeting other transfer students and networking with UC San Diego Biology faculty seeking student researchers.

BUMMP: Biology Undergraduate and Master's Mentorship Program

BUMMP is the Biology Undergraduate and Master's Mentorship Program at UC San Diego. UCSD is an incubator for brilliance and innovation, especially in the Biology Department. Our primary aim is to ensure that our undergraduate and master's students who are underrepresented are equipped with an awareness of their place in science and the strength to stand in that place and advance to higher heights.

Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD)

The IMSD program seeks to motivate, mentor, and facilitate the transition of students from disadvantaged economic and social backgrounds and students with disabilities from college education to Ph.D. programs in the sciences. We offer basic lab skills training, paid work experience and mentorship in a research lab, and advising on applying to graduate school.

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC)

The UC San Diego Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (UCSD MRSEC) is working to understand two current fundamental challenges in materials research: how to predict and command self-assembly for mesomaterials synthesis (IRG1: Predictive Assembly); and how to deploy the tools of synthetic biology to build soft materials (IRG2: Stimuli-Responsive Living Polymeric Materials). Both challenges require the combined efforts of investigators from Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Computational Sciences, and Engineering.

Math Testing and Placement

The Math Testing and Placement Office (MTP) assists all students to complete their math placement as early as possible so that they are eligible to enroll in math coursework at UC San Diego. Early completion of math placement helps students to finish their math requirements for majors in courses that are core dependencies for later scholarship. And when applicable, math placement plays a critical role in student’s eligibility to participate in summer programs that offer entry-level math coursework.

Office for Students with Disabilities

Through an interactive process, the Office for Students with Disabilities reviews documentation and determines reasonable accommodations for classrooms, labs, housing, dining, transportation, and campus programming for students impacted by mental health challenges, physical and learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and Autism/ASD.

STARTneuro Undergrad Research Program

STARTneuro is a competitive program that trains, mentors, and funds diverse incoming transfer students as they enter neuroscience research. Our program begins with a summer research training program to ramp students up on key neuroscience techniques and facilitates lab placements with faculty mentors during the school year.
