The Armenian Student Association was established in order to promote Armenian culture among students at UC San Diego. Cancer Outreach Team

Our mission is to reduce the rates of cancer morbidity and mortality among the Asian Pacific Islander (API) community. The team follows a grocery store-based education module in which students outreach to the API community at Asian grocery stores. UC San Diego and SDSU students have been engaged in this program since the spring of 1994. During outreaches, students distribute brochures containing life-saving information. With Dr. Sadler as the club’s program mentor, the team has reached almost 11,000 members of the API community for the breast cancer module alone. There are two dozen peer-reviewed publications by Dr. Sadler supporting how and why this program works. After this program proved to be highly effective, it was then applied to other health issues.

Darkstar is the Science Fiction and Fantasy Library at UC San Diego. It was founded in 1978 to gather all those interested in speculative fiction, and has somehow survived intact. Darkstar has over 6,000 speculative fiction books, and a multitude of events, including a weekly board game night that occurs on Friday evenings.       In the summer of 1997, a group of seven young Chicana/Latina women brought together by UC San Diego’s Summer Bridge program, realized there was a need for an on-campus support organization that met their interests. They worked together to form an organization by the name of Feminine Leaders in Outreach for La Raza, also known as F.L.O.R. Having experienced the lack of familia on campus, they knew that there had to be a number of other Chicana/Latinas who felt similarly and needed extra support adjusting to college life.

      On March 9, 1999, their efforts were made into reality and the Gamma Chapter of Phi Lambda Rho Sorority, Inc., was brought into existence by twelve founding sisters, making it the first of the Latina sororities at UC San Diego.
